Mulch
How to calculate how much you need?
Measure your beds and areas to be mulched. This does not have to be exact, but square off mulch circles around trees and average irregular beds. Measure length times width to get your square footage. A bed 20' long x 10' wide would = 200 square feet.
Now refer to the list below. If you need to put mulch on 2" thick, you will divide your square footage by 162 to get the number of cubic yards. As in our example- 200 sq. ft. divided by 162 sq. ft. = 1.23 cubic yards of mulch. You would then make a decision whether to get 1 cu. yd. of mulch or get 1 ½ cubic yards so as not to get caught short.
2" thick....162 square feet
3" thick.....108 sq. ft.
4" thick.....81 sq. ft.
6" thick.....54 sq. ft.
If you are buying mulch in bags, it will take 14 bags at 2 cu. ft. bag = 1 cu. yd. of mulch. We highly recommend that you always have a minimum of 4" of mulch on your beds to do the insulating job that mulch is meant to do in summer and in winter. Anything less is just cosmetic.
